Nearly five months ago, Lou and I left Northeast Harbor, raised Evelyn's sails and began our voyage south. We were sad to leave but excited to start exploring new places, and enjoyed a beautiful day of sailing. As the sun began to set, we found ourselves in Eggemoggin Reach and decided to spend the night in a nearby anchorage.
We wanted our entire journey to be like that--as unplanned as possible. We hoped that would lead us to visit new places, stay put when we wanted to stay put, meet new people and make new friendships, and to enjoy wherever we were at the moment.
Our experience aboard Evelyn this winter has been so enjoyable, and every day has been unique. We have tried to stay true to the ideals we started with, and I think we have. We've of course made mistakes, and they've been valuable lessons. But more importantly, we've done as we hoped: we have visited new places, made new friends, enjoyed our boat, our lives, and being together...every day.
And by luck, happenstance, and a twist of fate, we have the unique opportunity to relive the excitement we experienced during our first day of this journey again and again.
At that first anchorage we had the good fortune to meet the crew of OffCenterHarbor.com, an online source for classic boat lovers. OffCenterHarbor.com provides an intimate look into the world of classic and wooden boats through beautifully produced videos about seamanship, boat building, sailing skills, cabin tours, and much more...and in January they posted a video about Evelyn, filmed within the first twenty-four hours of our departure from Northeast Harbor.
Like many of our most memorable experiences this winter, meeting Benjamin, Steve, and Eric was unplanned. We are honored that they spent a Saturday morning on a beautiful fall day hanging out with us and Evelyn, and took the time to produce this video. We are strongly biased of course, but simply put, we love it. What we love most about it is that whenever we watch it we have the opportunity to relive the first day of our journey, and all the excitement comes rushing back!
Here is a behind the scenes narrative by Benjamin Mendlowitz on the making of "Destination Unknown: The Tahiti Ketch Evelyn," and a link to watch the full video on the Off Center Harbor website. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
